A Super Cool Success Story!

An 8 year old female began seeing Dr. Winchester for relief from her allergies and asthma. Dr. Winchester felt her symptoms and condition could possibly be caused or exacerbated by restricted motion between the bones in her neck. During routine examination of the patient, Dr. Winchester took x-rays to rule out what appeared to be a developing scoliosis through visual analysis and screening of her spine. The x-rays revealed a 12 degree scoliosis or curvature of the spine. Additionally, Dr. Winchester’s analysis of the x-ray also revealed a difference in the length of her young patient’s legs.

The 8 year old was instructed to wear a small lift in her shoe and begin Gonstead Chiropractic Adjustments to shift the spine back to a more neutral, natural alignment. The 8 year old has received 7 adjustments over 3months and new x-rays were taken in June 2010. The new radiographs revealed over a 50% reduction in the scoliosis. How cool! Dr. Winchester expects the scoliosis to improve even further with conservative treatment over the next several months.

The Facts:

  • Research shows, scoliosis and curvature of the spine leads to a greater incidence of degenerative and arthritic change to the bone later in life.

  • Scoliosis often goes undetected by visual screening methods.

  • Those individuals with scoliosis tend to have a higher risk of injury due to the stress placed on the musculoskeletal system.

  • Traditional medicine tends to recommend hard, plastic braces to children with curvature reaching a certain degree. This can usually be avoided if caught soon enough.
