Back Pain is hurting us – in the wallet. According to new government numbers, we spent nearly twice as much on the problem in 2007 as we did in 1997; more than $30 billion, up from an inflation – adjusted at $16billion a decade earlier. In addition to regular chiropractic care maintenance throughout the year you may be able to lower your risk of recurrence by strolling down the right aisle at the supermarket. According to some research it’s evident that certain foods can help with inflammation.
EAT MORE
- Cherries. One study showed that drinking 12 ounces of tart cherry juice twice a day for eight days reduced muscle pain and strain. Fresh or canned tart cherries are also helpful.
- Olive Oil
- Canned salmon, sardines packed in water or olive oil, mackerel, albacore tuna, flax –seed, and walnuts. All of which are a good source of OMEGA FATTY ACID (fish oil).
- Nuts of all kinds
- Green Tea
- Ginger. Try steeping a bit of the grated root in boiling water for tea.
EAT LESS
- Certain vegetable oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower or “mixed” vegetable oils
- Margarine and vegetable shortening
- Processed Foods
- Products containing high-fruit corn syrup
- Food high in saturated fat, including meat, tropical oils and full-fat dairy products
- Food made with trans fat
Drs. Winchester & Haggerty can help you combine the right supplements with the proper diet, to help lower inflammation in the body.

Injuries to the muscles and ligaments around the hip affect both competitive and recreational athletes. These injuries can interfere significantly with sports enjoyment and performance levels, and they occasionally will end participation completely. Excessive pronation and poor shock absorption have been found to be an underlying cause or a contributing factor for many leg injuries…
Hip & Thigh Injuries
Many injuries experienced at the hip develop from poor biomechanics and gait, especially when running. Smooth coordination of the muscles provide balance and support for the pelvis when needed for optimum sports performance. This includes the hamstring muscles and hip abductor muscles, especially the “IT Band”. When there is a biomechanical deficit from feet and ankles, abnormal motions (such as excessive rotation of the entire leg) will pull and strain these muscles. The hamstrings play a large role in the function to control the knee and ankle at heel strike, while helping to absorb some of the body’s impact when running.
Using Orthotics to correct excessive pronation and to treat hip problems requires an awareness of the various problems that can develop. These conditions will develop much more easily in athletes, who push their musculoskeletal systems. The good news is that many of these conditions can be prevented with custom-made orthotics. An evaluation of foot biomechanics is good idea.
See Drs. Winchester & Haggerty during one of your appointments for any related questions or ask the front desk to schedule your COMPLIMENTARY Foot Evaluation.
